Our meeting began with the joy of seeing each other including Alex who hadn't been able to attend a meeting for a long time.
It was an evening of catching up and appreciating our varied life experiences.
Cards were the instigators.
During our meeting, Alex pulled a card from the Kabbalah deck out of his pocket. He expressed his appreciation for having tools and read to us the card about shards of light in the darkness. Maybe those shards of light are with us every time we feel fear, worry, anxiety. Today I just pulled a card from the deck. It says "Because it could only receive the light and not share it, the Vessel did the only thing it could in order to become the Cause and remove Bread of Shame. It stopped receiving the Light! The ancient kabbalists called the Vessel's act of pushing back the Light--Resistance. Q: List the areas of your life where you have challenges or a lack of fulfillment. Is it possible you are experiencing Bread of Shame?"
During our meeting, first I pulled a card from the The Moth card deck about experiencing something new. Then Cyndi's young son Zeb pulled a card about either caving in to peer pressure or standing your ground. Today's card says "Tell us about a time you just couldn't resist. A time your eyes were bigger than your stomach. A time you pulled out all the stops to get what you wanted. Prepare a story about intense desires. Indulging with conviction or abstaining with difficulty! A sweet tooth, or a primal desire. Your hierarchy of needs. Pickles and ice cream, anyone?"
Could we add the cards together next time creating a kabbalistic moth story? Today I picked a Kabbalah card about resistance and a Moth card about not being able to resist.
Thank you Che for the beautiful napkins that we can use during our next in person gathering in April. Thank you all for bringing delish food and for sharing your stories: Annette's crashing chandelier, Joni's Dad's prayer shawl filled with his spirit, middle school pressures and more. . What a wonderful way to listen to each other. I'm looking forward to more Kabbalah/Moth inspired stories. Moths are drawn to the light on a summer evening while we spin our tales and Kabbalah is the light revealed through stories or dialogues as in the Zohar.
"You are a multitude of stories and those stories are part of our shared world." From the book How to Tell a Story: The essential guide to memorable storytelling from The Moth.
Enjoy the recipe!
Left at our house: Joni's canvas bag, a pink scarf and a batman watch. I will leave everything in the Videosyncracies pick-up box near our front door.
Our next meeting will be on Monday, February 6 at 6:00 p.m. on Zoom broadcasting from Montevideo, Uruguay where Paul and I will be working remotely for two months.
